The piece involves Hazel, a caster of magic, or, to use the common term, a witch. Unfortunately for her, she has been detained by those who believe that her abilities are the work and mark of devils and great evils. And for this, she is to be tortured to confess her transgressions and then once her confessions are complete, she will be put to death. Sound familiar? Think the Salem witch trials and the infamous Inquisition if you need your memory jogged. The image shows Hazel during her torment at the hands of two individuals, to extract her confessions. Her ankles in heavy irons, her arms have been tightly tied behind her back and she is made bare, exposed to her torturers. A noose has been slung around her neck and pulled taut, forcing her up on her tip-toes, making her breathing a labored effort at best. Inserted into her vagina is the Pear. As the name suggests, it is a metal, pear shaped device. The wide end is worked into the vagina (it was also forced down the throat or anus, depending on the whims of the torturer or the accused crime) and by turning a crank on the opposite end, the Pear expands inside, rending flesh. Hazel's pain was only just beginning, however. A Heretic's Fork has been placed upon her. This consists of a metal rod with twin, pointed prongs on both ends. One end is thrust into the upper chest along the sternum and this has already been done to Hazel. However, her torturers haven't yet mounted her head on the other end of the fork. When they do, the prongs will pierce the underside of her chin, making speech all but impossible and she will not be able to confess (but do they really want to hear her pleas given the large bit jammed in her muzzle already?). But, in reality, it matters not if she recants for the outcome is pre-ordained. Her torment will be complete when the last wire whip blow falls upon her backside and the last bit of her tender flesh is free of the piercing pincers. But the fires of the stake are hungry and need to be fed.
