The gladiatorial battles were a staple of Roman society, having their beginnings in 264 BC and rising into lavish spectacles until finally being banned in AD 681. Most gladiators were slaves, trained to fight. But others joined the games of their own volition, for many reasons. Vitalia is one of those who chose to join the games. She appears here, after a hard fought battle, the palm branch held high to signify her victory. There were specific classes of gladiator and of these, the four major classes were the retiarius, the thracian, the secutor, and the myrmillo. Vitalia is outfitted as a thracian fighter, although she is using the regular Roman army scutum (shield) as used by the secutor or myrmillo as opposed to her class shield, the much smaller parma. The identifier of her class is the curved sica sword. Another is the griffin on the peak of her galea (helmet). Upon her lower legs are ocrea (greaves) strapped down over padding made of bandages called fascia. The defense on her right arm is called the manica and this particular version consists of metal plating, padding, and a elbow couter. Her breasts are covered by a strophium while her subligaculum (loin cloth) is held up via a decorated balteus (belt).
